Scuba Diving in Micronesia

Micronesia has the best scuba diving sights in the world. Scattered across the azure waters of the Pacific Ocean are approximately 2,000 islands that make up the countries of the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, Kiribati; and Palau. This region, otherwise collectively known as Micronesia, is nearly 6,000 miles from Los Angeles.

The best time to dive in Micronesia is during the dry season which runs from December through April. During this time, the waters are crystal clear and visibility is at its greatest. But with the sheer variety of scuba diving sites that can be found in Micronesia, diving year round is possible if you know where the best spots are.

Some of the top scuba diving sites in Micronesia can be found in Palau, Truk, Yap, the Marshall Islands, and Kosrae. Many of these islands are very primitive and untouched by modern civilization. This guarantees a unique diving and cultural experience that can be matched by no other. Here is a brief overview of some of the top scuba diving destinations of Micronesia:

  • Palau – The biodiversity associated with the marine life in the waters of Palau is among the greatest in the world. But if you want to dive Palau, you better be prepared to take a lengthy boat trip. Some of the best scuba diving sites in Palau can only be reached by weaving through magnificent rock islands to reach calm waters and the top dive sites. Some of the top sites include the Great Wall at Ngemelis, Blue Corner, and the walls around the tip of Peleliu.

  • Truk – Truk is home to some of the best wreck scuba diving to be had anywhere in the world. Scattered over the 40 mile diameter of Truk’s tropical lagoon are nearly 70 ships and numerous aircraft belonging to Japan. These crafts were sunk during US Naval air attacks against Japan during WWII. Today, they are draped with stunning corals and provide habitat for abundant marine life.

  • Yap – Yap is extremely pure. In fact, no clubs or hotels mar the ocean front of this unique, primitive island. Here, bare-breasted women and men in loincloths give the island the traditional feel that it’s famous for. While there may not be many amenities, scuba diving in Yap is an unforgettable experience. This is one of the best locations in the world to spot the Manta Ray, and for this reason, researchers often visit the area.

In addition to these sites, there are scores and scores of other great scuba diving sites to be found in Micronesia. Be forewarned, though, some of them are remote and require long boat rides to reach. Also be careful about where you stay in Micronesia. Primitive living conditions enjoyed by natives on the smaller island groups might not be suited to your lifestyle.
